A New Year, A New You!

Sarah MacLachlan once said, “Change and growth are so painful, but it’s so necessary for us to evolve.” As we enter a new year, I’m resolving to embrace change and continue evolving as a coach. After 26 years of experience, I’ve learned that growth is essential—not just for myself but also for the players I guide. This year, I commit to focusing not on wins and losses but on the experience I provide for my players. Coaching isn’t just about strategies or stats; it’s about shaping lives and fostering a love for the game.

Why stay in a role that’s often stressful and demanding? Simply, “Because I love the Game.”

Despite its challenges, coaching is a journey of highs and lows that brings joy, purpose, and the chance to inspire young athletes.

Let my resolution guide you to grow, evolve, and lead passionately in the year ahead.

Embracing a Growth Mindset

 🧠 Growth Mindset Matters
The most important tool I’ve added to my coaching toolkit is a Growth Mindset, a concept developed by Dr. Carol Dweck. It’s about learning from mistakes, seeking constant improvement, and teaching players to do the same. For me, this mindset changed everything—from my confidence to how I connect with athletes.

Through stories of failure, perseverance, and resilience, I’ve found that my players learn life lessons that extend far beyond the field. Soccer becomes the vehicle for teaching them how to face challenges, grow as individuals, and build relationships.

Coaching Today’s Players

 👩‍🏫 Personalized Learning
Today’s players are different from those we coached even five years ago. They need:

  • Differentiated instruction tailored to their unique learning styles.

  • Opportunities to ask questions and feel confident.

  • An environment that balances fun with the desire to improve.

🏆 Winning Isn’t Everything
Winning is a part of the game, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of a child’s mental well-b

eing. Our top priorities should be creating a positive team atmosphere and building players’ confidence.

🤝 Building Connections
Incorporating social-emotional activities—just 5–10 minutes of meaningful connection—helps players feel valued and fosters a stronger team bond.

The Roadmap for Modern Coaching

Here’s how we can evolve as coaches:

  1. Set clear expectations and demand effort while encouraging potential. 📝

  2. Prioritize fun—kids play soccer because it’s a game, and games should be enjoyable! ⚽

  3. Communicate openly, listening to and valuing players’ input. 🗣️

  4. Incorporate team-building activities to strengthen bonds and foster trust. 🤝

  5. Encourage reflection on their experiences, promoting self-awareness and growth. 💭

Lasting Impact

 🌱 Growth and Teamwork
The most rewarding teams I’ve coached were those that embraced a growth mindset. They grew into cohesive units, celebrated each other’s successes, and supported one another through challenges.

❤️ A Love for the Game

As coaches, our ultimate goal should be to cultivate a lifelong love for the game. Whether this love inspires players to become future coaches, referees, or fans, this legacy truly matters.
